Celebrate the sandwich

November 3 – John Montague was born on this day in 1718.

If that name doesn’t sound familiar, perhaps you know him by his royal title, the fourth earl of Sandwich. And he’s famous for inventing something we all enjoy.

Evidently, Montague was quite a gambler and didn’t have time to eat a normal meal, which interfered with his play. So the quick thinker asked his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread.

Legend has it that his gambling friends liked the idea of eating at the card table and began ordering “the same as Sandwich” – and voila – the sandwich was born.

In honor of this momentous occasion, I will celebrate with my favorite sandwich at lunch today: turkey, American cheese, red onion and lettuce on rye!
